School: X129, ilead
Grade: 6-8
Classroom: Computer lab, Ms. Davis’s room and Ms. Carney’s room Technology discussion:
During my visit to MS 129 I met with Mr. Aversano Silvio, technology coach; Ms. Yvette Beasle, principal; Ms. Carney, teacher and Ms. Davis, teacher. I completed the technology survey with Mr. Aversano and visited two classes. The discussions we had surrounded around the services OIT has to offer, PD, and onsite consultation. I explored with them our iCoach website and Protraxx. We then spoke about the technology that is available in the school, principal’s vision and goals for technology integration and teacher collaboration. This school has very good technology tools in every classroom including a smart board cart (laptop, projector, smartboard-some with speakers), laptop cart (Lenovo X41) for the 8th grades and special education classes. There is also a Mac lab for the 6th and 7th grades. Teachers had received PD over the summer through the iteach-ilearn program. However, both the principal and the technology coach feel that even though teachers are using the smartboard cart, students (especially the 8th grade with the laptop carts) are not using the laptops on a regular basis. Most of the activities teachers use the laptops for are research.
Goal One: Create a school web portal (similar to portaportal) with links to the subject areas taught in the school. The portal will be linked to the school’s webpage and will enable students to go to an “online library” created by and for the teachers of the school. The principal is interested in achieving this goal. The portal will be populated with teachers hand picked resources through collaboration with each teacher contributing X number of links based on their subject area. Silvio will be responsible for creating and organizing the portal.
Goal Two: Implement long-term projects to support and advance students’ writing skills. Possibilities: Inspiration, peer-review, Wiki’s, Blogs, advanced word, publisher, podcasting, websites and more.
Items Discussed During Articulation:
How to use iCoach site and Protraxx
How to create an “online library” tailored for the school’s needs
Possible projects (main focus is writing and research skills)
Online research skills for teachers, online bookmarking
Software, online resources and applications that support writing (inspiration, wiki’s, blog’s, Word, Publisher, etc)
Details of Classroom Collaboration:
All teachers will collaborate to create the school’s online librar
Collaboration through projects
Next Steps: (Follow-up Procedures):
Silvio is examining site permissions and portal options. We will touch base at the end of January
Scheduling time for me to work with teachers on finding resources .
Anticipated Outcomes:
· Outcome 1: Create an online library tailored to the school’s subject areas for students’ research work.
· Outcome 2: Teachers become proficient at finding resources for their students and are aware of Information Literacy.
· Outcome 3: Plan-create-produce technology based writing projects
